VIDEO: 3rd Annual Winston County Garden Tours

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)—Gardeners in Winston County spend most of Saturday show casing their best work.

The Winston County Master Gardeners Association hosts it’s third annual garden tours, free for the community to attend.

Three Winston County gardeners opened their yards to allow the community to see various garden styles, new, and different plants and flowers.

” We have five blueberry bushes that are the back ground of my perennial bed. They are very prolific this year. I love those. I don’t know how many crape myrtles I’ve planted and now they are umbrella huge,”said Garden Tours host Beth McCool.

McCool moved into her home 20 years ago. She says from her arrival, with her love of gardening, she knew Louisville was the place to be.

“Louisville is a rare little town in lots of ways. We have a large number of water colorists, artists. It’s really an artsy town. We have wonderful musicians. We have wonderful gardeners,” said McCool.

Secretary for the Master Gardeners, Beverly Combs, says it’s not everyday you have a large interest for gardening in such a small area.

“Well it is unique in a small town like Louisville, to have so many people that enjoy gardening and are willing to share their gardens with the community,”said Combs.

According to Combs, the tours started out as just a master gardener event, then the association decided to open it to the public.

Garden tour host Rebecca Gravett says she hopes the garden tours encourage others to join.

“It takes a lot of work but there are people that are very interested. If you find that one person is interested, there are usually going to be others who get inspired or are interested. We share plants a lot. We’re a tight gardening community. We enjoy each other and encourage each other. I don’t feel like there’s any competition. All of our gardens are beautiful and all of them are unique,”said Gravett.

The Winston County Master Gardeners Association also awards a yard of the month. Gravett says the gardens that are on the tour, usually come from that award.
