Video: Middle School Teachers Get Big Surprise Day Before Classes Start, Courtesy Of A Local Church

PLANTERSVILLE, MISS. (WCBI) – Churches and schools are cornerstones of communities across the country.

Big things happen when they team up and some area middle school teachers are benefiting from an adoption.

Days before school starts, teachers are busy preparing their classroom.

Some believe a little prayer will help, as the semester begins.

Just after words of thanks on Wednesday, Plantersville Middle School teachers were surprised with a new lounge.

Cornerstone Church in Tupelo adopted the school.  The congregation worked hard to give the educators a place to collect their thoughts and plan assignments.

“The remodeling that they did, has taken our former lounge to another level,” said Jerrion Smith, the new assistant principal at Plantersville Middle School.

She knows the teachers appreciate all of the major improvements.

“Just the furniture they have done, the tables, this was handmade, and the love they have poured into our school and our teachers,” she said.

There are also new shelves, cabinets, a new refrigerator, a magnetic data board, where teachers will keep up with students’ progress , and fresh coats of paint.

For Cornerstone Church members and staff, this partnership is true missions work that will have a big impact.

“One of the main things we should do as Christians is not getting caught up in the four walls, but going out and actually being a light to people who don’t see us in the building,” said Outreach Pastor Michael Stamps.

“My husband and I both were teachers for years and we understand the huge investments teachers make in the kids lives and just to see they were so excited and had a place where they can come and have meetings and just kind of relax and chill on their breaks, that was huge to us and it was exciting,” said Pastor Shari Robbins.

In this partnership, no child on this campus is left behind. Members of Cornerstone Church will be back here next week, handing out nearly 300 backpacks to students as they start a new school year.

Several other local churches have also “adopted” the Plantersville Middle School campus.
