Video: Tupelo schools host eclipse viewing
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)- Shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, students at Lawhon Elementary went outside where they had an eclipse viewing party, complete with popcorn.
Twenty six students were watching the path of totality over their school with their special glasses. Students and teachers say it’s something they won’t forget.
Special eclipse viewing glasses were provided for all TPSD students by McDonald’s Franchisee Rob Hudson.
“I think the sun is fighting the moon.” said 5th grader El Shaddai Dilworth.
5th grader Lucy Gratz was amazed as she watched, “The sun going to win but now the sun is losing.”
Some students were disappointed in the totality path across Tupelo.
“It’s sort of disappointing, because I knew that it was going to get a little darker and cooler but it didn’t really get that dark,” said Gratz.
Teachers say the experience was very educational.
“This is a teachable moment, regardless but helping the kids understand we’re all teaching them together makes a big difference,” said science teacher Kimberly Burkley.
Students and teachers also noticed the quick temperature drop as the eclipse took place.
