VIDEO: Monroe County Deputies Are On A Mission To Put A Halt To Drug Trafficking

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department is putting drug dealers in the area on notice.

On Thursday, deputies were out in full force as they conducted a drug sweep looking to put an end to drug trafficking.

“Basically if you don’t fight drugs, drugs will take over your county and we’re trying to keep that from happening,” said Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell.

Pills, ice, and marijuana were all seized during the drug sweep.

“We’re out here to enforce the law and if you are out here doing drugs, you’re selling drugs, using drugs in this county, then we’re going to deal with you,” said Cantrell.

Deputies spent part of the day setting up check points near businesses on Industrial Drive in Amory, a place they say is a hot spot for drug activity.

“We’ve been having reports for the last few months,” the sheriff said. “We’ve had some inside help from workers that work there, they’ve been telling us who and what’s been selling drugs so we’re just going to try and put a stop to it.”

Within minutes of being out on the roadblock, deputies had two suspects in handcuffs for being in possession of marijuana.

“We haven’t been here what, 10 minutes and already have two in custody for drugs, so it just goes to show how prevalent drugs are, and you think that those guys are not, but they are, they are high on drugs,” Cantrell expressed. “Of course, they’ve been working today, so they’ve been doing it at their place of work evidently.”

Once deputies finished up there, they then headed over to Nettleton, where Cantrell said they took down a big time drug dealer.

“He’s been terrorizing this community for several months,” Cantrell explained. “We knew he was selling drugs and today we put an end to it. We took another drug dealer off the streets.”

The sheriff said the alleged drug dealer just made a transaction prior to deputies arriving.

“There’s a lady who was sitting on the porch acting strange and we went down there and checked her, she had just left here and she had some more drugs,” he recalled. “It’s just more drugs that he’s been selling here, he’s been selling quite a bit.”

Cantrell is urging residents if they see any drug activity taking place, call in and report it to the sheriff’s office.
