New Hope hosts 20th annual special olympics

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – New Hope School’s variation of the Special Olympics doesn’t stop for rain delay today.

New Hope’s Gymnasium provided the venue for Beta Club and special needs students.

Different individual and team races were held in the gym.

Teachers say this is a great way to bring the student body together.

“We feel like our Beta Club members need this so that they can see that these special needs kids are just like they are,” Beta Club sponsor Elizabeth Malone continued, “They’re just kids. They just want to have a good time, and we never have any trouble. They always interact well and get along because they see that these kids are just like they are.”

“You meet so many new kids, and they’re so personable. Like, they just want to know more about you and you get to know more about them, so it’s a lot of fun,” says Senior Maddie Beard.

This is the 20th year New Hope has held their special olympics.
