Hung Jury On Capital Murder Case
LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Lowndes County jury cannot decide on the fate of capital murder suspect Derrick Bankhead.
The trial ended in a hung jury just a few moments ago.
This means jurors could not agree on the capital murder or the lesser charge of second degree murder in the case.
Derrick Bankhead is accused of killing his cousin, Eddie Bankhead, during an armed robbery in July 2011.
Bankhead was convicted in September 2016 in Lowndes County Circuit Court.
However, that verdict was overturned.
Bankhead’s attorney learned that District Attorney Scott Colom was a stand-in defense attorney for Bankhead during a preliminary hearing in 2011.
The state Attorney General’s office is prosecuting the case.
No word on whether the state will attempt to try this case again.
