Hamilton Gin Fire

HAMILTON, Miss. (WCBI) – It make take some time to completely extinguish a fire at the Farmers Gin.

Witnesses tell WCBI News that an apparent equipment malfunction sparked the fire. It quickly turned into a blaze.

There were no injuries to workers on the scene.

Plumes of smoke could be seen in parts of Monroe and Lowndes Counties.

Fire fighters will remain on location to work with the smouldering cotton and monitor hot spots.

“This fire is very hard to put out because it’s packed with cotton seed and its going to be like putting out sawdust…it’s packed in there and we are going to have to dig it out with an excavator,” says Prairie Fire Chief, Carl Stahl.

Farmers Gin, Incorporated was established in 1964.
