VIDEO: Celebrating A Snow Day

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – If you live in Mississippi with the hopes of never seeing snow you may have been a little disappointed this morning, December 8.

A lot of our viewing area woke up to a winter wonderland and our Victoria Bailey hit the road to Southern Winston County to check out the winter magic.

“We’ve been tackling each other and throwing snowballs as hard as we can,”said Winston County resident Kalee Cumberland.

That’s what many kids in Winston County did after inches inches of snow sprinkled over many parts of Northeast Mississippi Friday morning.

“We’ve been blessed with winter like precipitation this morning. Here in Nanih Waiya we’ve got about three to four inches of snow and hasn’t really caused any complications it’s just been an event of beauty,” said Winston County EMA Director Buddy King.

“It was a surprised, usually when it snows here it’s February or maybe even march so this was a surprise and we’re enjoying it so,” said Nanih Waiya high school senior Bryce Stanton.

Schools in Nanih Waiya were still open but Senior Bryce and his family still took full advantage of the wintry wonderland.

“We don’t see snow very much but it’s a special day. You get to spend it with your family and is always fun. You have all of your cousins and brothers and siblings out here and have a good time with them,”said Stanton.

There weren’t any road closures or power outages reported during the morning snowfall but King says that doesn’t mean danger was still lurking.

“As you can see behind me, one of the reasons we’re standing here, the power lines are shaking and vibrating. That’s our biggest worry. When it starts impending on our quality of life and things that we can prepare for , then we begin to worry,”said King.

For some, the cold surprise was welcomed. It’s been years since some saw a snow day in Mississippi.

“We’re just lucky to have a snow day not very many people get it around here. The last time was 2012 so we are just happy to have a snow day,”said Winston County resident Eli Stanton.

King says since this may not be the last we see of the flakes this season residents should go ahead and adopt safety measures now.

“One of the greatest injuries is potentials we have are slips and falls, we have so many people that injure themselves and slip and falls, especially around the home on side walks that are also slick areas, be real careful pay attention to your foot ware, have some tread on the shoes that your wearing and of course the vehicles. Go slow and easy and stay off the brakes where necessary,”said  King.

This snow storm has spanning two thousand miles, produced flurries in New York City down to Brownsville Texas.
