Beloved Teacher Remembered By Students

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – Sherry Buford is being remembered as a teacher who cared for each of her students, and instilled discipline and excellence in young people.

Buford was a sixth grade math teacher at Oxford Intermediate School.

This morning, black ribbons were placed outside the school, in memory of the educator.

Steve Hurdle is principal at Oxford Intermediate, and also a longtime friend of Buford’s.

He says the school has had counselors and pastors available for students to talk with.

Hurdle says although Buford didn’t have any children of her own, all of her current and former students were part of her family.

“Ms. Buford, and this is where I will get emotional, she was a beloved teacher, when I say that I’m not just saying that to respect her today, she was somebody that our students, faculty all adored, once you were one of Ms Buford’s students, you were always Ms Buford’s student, I imagine at the high school and middle school there’s a lot of grief going on there today as well, kids who have come through and had Ms Buford as a teacher,” says Hurdle.

Buford spent more than 13 years in public education.
