Airport grounds property tax bill moves on to state Senate

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Legislation moving through the state Capitol could bring tax revenue back to Lowndes County.

Right now, businesses located on airport grounds are not required to pay property tax.

House Bill 1162 would reverse this law.

This year, Lowndes County and the county school district lost hundreds of thousands of dollars after the previously unenforced law came into the spotlight.

State Representative Jeff Smith said this could save everyone, including taxpayers, a lot of money.

“There were three separate bills introduced, two of them by me and one passed. I think that is House Bill 1162, which is a pretty big deal for the county, especially the school district. We stand out here in the school district and this will be able to perhaps save the school district about $1.4 million a year,” said District 39 representative Jeff Smith.

The bill has been passed by the House and is now waiting on the state Senate to take action.
