Alabama Narrows List Of Possible Education Chiefs

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – There are six finalists to become the next school superintendent of Alabama.

The Department of Education announced the finalists Tuesday. The finalists include three local school superintendents, including one veteran of the state Department of Education.

The finalists are Bill Evers, a research fellow at Stanford University; Dee Fowler, superintendent of Madison City Schools; Craig Pouncey, superintendent of Jefferson County Schools and former deputy state superintendent; Janet Womack, superintendent of Florence City Schools; Jeana Ross, secretary of the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education; Michael Sentence, an education consultant and former education adviser to the Massachusetts governor.

State Board of Education members will interview the six candidates on Aug. 4.

State board members began searching for a new superintendent after Tommy Bice announced his retirement in March.
