Corrections spokesman Bob Horton says the officer was listed in serious condition Friday. That’s an improvement from after the attack on Thursday, when the officer was in critical condition.

Officials have yet to release the officer’s name. But they say the worker was stabbed in retaliation after an inmate was denied extra food in the dining hall.

The prison spokesman says inmate Cleveland Cunningham is charged with attempted murder. Cunningham is serving a 20-year sentence on a first-degree conviction in 2013 in Baldwin County.

Officials have reported several violent incidents this year at Holman prison. The warden was stabbed along with an officer during a riot that occurred in March.
