LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County residents had an early wake up call this morning with a gas leak evacuation.

According to Lowndes County EMA director Cindy Lawrence, It happened around 2:00 this morning on Gilbur-Wilburn road in the Artesia area. 911 operators received a call of large explosion and the smell of natural gas. Lowndes County deputies and Atmos Energy responded to the scene in a rural bean field. The Southern Natural Gas Line had ruptured.

Residents in the city of Artesia were evacuated to West Lowndes High School, and were sent back home around 5:30 when the scene was secure.
