Bulldogs Take Home 4th Straight Governor’s Cup

PEARL, Miss. (MSU Athletics) – In front of a stadium-record crowd, the No. 9 Mississippi State baseball program claimed its fourth-straight Governor’s Cup with an 8-1 victory over No. 23 Ole Miss on Tuesday (April 23) evening at Trustmark Park, home of the Mississippi Braves.

After the Rebels (27-15) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, the Bulldogs (33-9) scored eight unanswered runs between the fifth and eighth innings, including a pair of three-run innings in the sixth and seventh.

After Ole Miss scratched across the first run of the contest, sophomore Rowdey Jordan knotted the score with a solo home run in the fifth. Sophomore Justin Foscue plated the next two runs with a two-RBI double down the right-field line in the sixth inning to give MSU the lead for good.

For his go-ahead RBIs, Foscue earned Most Valuable Player honors for the 2019 Governor’s Cup.

Senior Jake Mangum, junior Dustin Skelton, and sophomores Tanner Allen and Jordan Westburg, each plated one RBI in the contest.

The trio of Allen, Jordan and Westburg each moved reached base streaks to 10 games.

After senior Peyton Plumlee threw the first four innings, giving way to redshirt-junior Keegan James for two-thirds of an inning. Redshirt-junior Trysten Barlow (3-1) entered and threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.

Junior Colby White fanned two in a scoreless seventh and senior Jared Liebelt fired the final two innings scoreless with two strikeouts.
