POMONA, Calif. – One of two Pomona police officers shot while responding to a barricaded suspect has died, CBS Los Angeles reports. Pomona police Chief Michael Olivieri announced the tragic news early Saturday morning, while a standoff with the suspect continues.
“It is with a heavy heart that I must report that one officer did not survive,” Olivieri said in a Tweet.
The other wounded officer was shot in the jaw and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery, a law enforcement source told KCAL9.
A sheriff’s SWAT team remained on scene Saturday morning where the gunman was still believed to be barricaded inside an apartment. The standoff was ongoing as of 8 a.m.
The shooting was reported at 9:10 p.m. Friday in the 1400 block of South Palomares Street, said Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting Pomona police in the investigation.
Schrader said the sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team also was on scene Saturday to help bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
