Changing The Capitol’s Pot Laws

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Mississippi’s capital city is reducing penalties for people who are caught with small amounts of marijuana.

The Jackson City Council approved plans to decriminalize possession of 30 grams or less of dope.

Jail time will be prohibited and fines reduced to $100.

The changes will take effect in one month.

State law currently allows for up to three years in prison and a $3,000 fine for possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana.

It was not immediately clear whether Mississippi cities are allowed to set smaller penalties for drug possession.
