Churches could be missing out on tax savings

NETTLETON, Miss. (WCBI)- Mississippi’s northern district public service commissioner says many churches are missing out on tax savings.

Public Service Commissioner, Brandon Presley, says lawmakers passed legislation several years ago, making houses of worship exempt from having to pay sales tax on utility bills.

Presley says many churches are unaware of the exemption, and his office wants to make sure they are not only aware, but also can be refunded if they have paid the sales tax.

“We can work through the steps to get those charges removed. Many churches are not taking advantage of this sales tax exemption on electricity, natural gas and water. We’re glad to help with this if they contact our office and it can save them hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year,” said Presley.

Presley says pastors with questions can call his office at 1-800-637-7722.
