Columbus City Council votes to proceed with annexation plans

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The City of Columbus could be expanding its borders.

During a closed Executive Session at last week’s meeting, the City Council voted four to two to proceed with an annexation plan that would expand the city limits to the east and south.

The city had contracted with Bridge and Watson to study the costs of annexing three areas.

Council members voted to reject area one which was mainly Columbus Air Force Base, but approved taking in what are referred to as areas two and three.

Areas two and three lie near the city’s current limit along Lehmberg Road.

The study looked at the cost of providing various city services as well as the demographic makeup of the neighborhoods, and potential new property tax revenue.

The plan still has several steps before it can go into effect.

There will have to be a suitable time for citizen comment and challenge, and the Circuit Court must approve the city’s rationale for expansion.

WCBI will continue to follow this story.
