Columbus teen charged with murder after Propst Park shooting

COLUMBUS, Miss. (CPD PRESS RELEASE)- Columbus Police have charged a 17-year-old man with murder following a shooting at Propst Park on Saturday, July 20, 2019 that killed another teen.

Curtis Lathan, of Columbus, has been charged with murder following an investigation by Columbus Police.

Lathan appeared before a judge Tuesday evening and was denied bond based on the seriousness of the crime, according to Police Chief Fred Shelton.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said Arykah Patrice White died at the scene of the shooting Saturday.

Police say shots were fired outside the Propst Park Community Center in the Northeast corner of the park.

“I want to thank those people that have cooperated and helped us with this investigation,” said Police Chief Fred Shelton. “Our investigation into this case continues and we ask the public to continue to contact us with information.“

The shooting has now prompted city leaders to implement new security measures at all city owned venues.

Mayor Robert Smith says city facilities will now be equipped with security cameras, increased police patrols, and enforcement of proper operation hours.

The murder investigation is still open.
