Duo tries to cash fake lottery check

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Two Columbus men hoped to be on their way to a pricey lottery payoff. One small problem. The ticket they tried to cash was fake.

Odis Latham, 47, and Russell Sparks, 48, showed up at the state lottery office Monday morning to cash a ticket worth $100,000.

A lottery official questioned the look of the ticket and it turns out the pair glued winning numbers to match those needed to win the six figures.

Both have been charged with conspiracy to commit afelony and uttering counterfeit instruments over $1,000. Latham was also charged with false ID information.

The men are being held at the Rankin County Jail with no bond and were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
