ALCORN COUNTY, MS (WCBI) – A preliminary report is pointing towards  equipment failure as a likely cause of a Christmas Eve plane crash in Alcorn County.

Doctor David Chase of Booneville and three members of his family took off just after 8:30 Christmas Eve morning on a flight to Florida.  The National Transportation Safety Board report says Chase noticed an  engine cowling door had opened slightly and he tried to return to the airport.  Before he could make it the door opened completely and Chase tried to maintain control of the aircraft.   The engine remained at full power but the plane  hit a tree before coming to a rest in the front yard of a home and catching fire. Chase and two other passengers are recovering from their injuries but his daughter in law Lauren Chase remains in a Memphis hospital where she continues to recover  from a head injury.
