Former Columbus educator convicted of child sex crime loses appeal

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A former Columbus educator loses an effort to have his conviction on sexual exploitation of a child charges overturned.

Former Columbus High Choir Director Michael Jackson claimed the court should not have heard a confession he gave Columbus Police.

Jackson argued that statement was given after he had asked for a lawyer and that statement and evidence gathered from a search of his home were disallowed.

The Mississippi Court of Appeals Tuesday ruled there is enough proof that Jackson waived his rights and volunteered the statement to police.

Jackson is currently serving a seven-year prison sentence
