A Global Day Of Giving

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving, fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Nadia Colom says social media among other things, has helped raise awareness and money for the children who are a part of the Boys and Girls Club.

“When you can get in the car in the morning and turn on the radio and hear national syndications talking about giving Tuesday it kind of makes that connection for us now on the local level that wasn’t there before,” said Colom. “I looked at my page just today on Facebook and you know before lunch time we’re already at almost 1000 dollars which you know is unheard of for us so that’s great, really great.”

Colom has participated in Giving Tuesday for the past three years.

She says it allows people who move to different areas to continue to invest in places still near and dear to their hearts.

“We’re just now opening a boys and girls club back in our West Point location,” said Colom. “And we have so many people who grew up in West Point like myself and who have moved on to other places and are really still very invested in the community and in the success of this youth, and so just seeing how many people are you know on our page saying you know come on home team let’s do it, let’s do it, just camaraderie around focusing in on I’m giving back to that community is really exciting to me.”

Colom understands that it’s easy to get caught up with holiday sales this time of year; however, Giving Tuesday is a day that brings the focus back to giving.

“You know everything is about ‘did you catch that sale coming up on cyber Monday and Black Friday’ and all this kind of stuff so it’s great to have a Giving Tuesday in there just to remind everybody that that’s the real purpose of the season.

Mattie Hicks has also seen many donations within the past few hours.

But she says people don’t just give today.

“Well I’m always glad to see all the donations coming in,” said Hicks. “I’m glad that people have that hospitality and being in the south we do have a lot of people who really have a giving spirit and it’s all year around.”
