Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers cracks down on crooks for the holidays

GOLDEN TRIANGLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It is the holiday season! More people are out traveling and shopping. With all that holiday fun and activity come more opportunities for crooks to spoil your merry mood.

Crime Stoppers wants to make sure that those who prey on the holidays end up seeing the Christmas lights from a cell.

Most of the year the organization pays up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in a crime.

But, this year, Crime Stoppers President, Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said they’re offering a Christmas Bonus of sorts, doubling the reward on tips.

“Typically this time of year, you’ve got people that’s buying gifts,” Scott said. “We’ve had stuff stolen out of cars, Christmas gifts stolen out of homes, also, you’ve got people that are getting money out of their savings for Christmas shopping. So, purse snatching and stuff also increases.”

Scott said doing this gets the public more involved in stopping crimes. If you see something, say something.

“We have our crime stoppers phone number that you can call, and now we also have what’s called the P3 App,” Scott said. “You download it on your phone, the beauty in this app is that you can also send photographs or videos, and it also allows our coordinators to respond through email. The app is also anonymous, so we never know exactly who we are talking to on the other end.”

Scott said with the spike in crime that usually comes with the holidays, it takes a community effort to solve the problem.

“We just want to encourage people to be careful this holiday season, be aware of your surroundings,” Scott said. “Know that there’s thieves out there that want to steal. If you’re going to be out of town, have someone watching your house and security systems. and again, for our ladies out there who carry purses and stuff be aware of your surroundings. Don’t keep a bunch of money and stuff in your purses, and just be safe.”

The number for Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers is (800)530-7151, or you can leave a tip on the p3 app.
