VERNON, Ala. (WCBI) – The Lamar County High School football team is trying to rebound from a down year last season. A young Bulldogs team won three games in 2015.

They only lose a few starters from that team, but it was not the year head coach James Moore and his team wanted to have.

“Going 3-7 last year was a disappointment,” he said. “We knew we were young. We were outmatched but we kept working. You could tell it was disappointing to them.”

“There was a lot of disappointment last year,” senior Jon Kilpatrick said. “We want to do better and make everyone proud.”

“We’re excited to put it in the past,” senior Andrew Norton. “We want to do something a little better this year.”

It’s still a youthful team in Vernon. The freshman and sophomore classes are the largest and many of those players get to see valuable playing time a year ago.

We’re fairly young,” Moore said. “I had a lot of freshman starting on both sides of the ball. It’ll help them in the long run.”

Vernon has moved down from 3A to 2A this season and is in a whole new region, which includes rival Sulligent. The Bulldogs are looking to build a foundation they hope can lead them back to the kind of success this school has seen in the past.

“They won two state championships,” sophomore Bo Spencer. “We have a history of doing good. We want to make the first round this year and go as far as we can.”

Moore is heading into his second year. He said four guys are competing for the starting quarterback spot. All are sophomores and freshmen.
