Lowndes Co. Supervisors move ahead with improving Airport Road safety

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Lowndes County supervisors move ahead with improving safety on Airport Road.

Supervisors heard concerns about traffic safety in that area.

They were going to approach the Mississippi Department of Transportation about improving signage along Airport Road or allowing the board to take action.

After consulting with an engineer about contracts with MDOT and what each group was responsible for, Supervisors found they already had the authority to make the necessary changes.

The biggest problem has been drivers mistakenly going the wrong way on a portion of the road and coming close to head-on collisions.

“When somebody comes off of 82, if they are going west, and they come off 82 to get onto Airport Road, that’s a little bit confusing. They make an immediate left, and they are traveling the wrong side of the road that wat, instead of crossing over the median, and then taking a left there,” said LCBS President Trip Hairston.

Supervisors decided to order the necessary Wrong Way signs and have them installed as soon as they were available.
