Lowndes County Sportsplex expects to have busy year

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – “2024’s going to be busy,” said Tom Velek, Deputy Director and Chief of Programs and Facilities for the Lowndes County Recreation Department.

The New Year is about to kick off and the BankFirst Yards Sportsplex already has a jam-packed schedule. I spoke with the county’s recreation leaders about how the facility will be more than just a venue.

Velek said the sportsplex was scheduled to be busy year-round.

“Between January 1 and the end of June, we already have six tournaments booked out here. We’ll probably have another two softball tournaments that are going to be coming in. Some people are looking at late fall-early summer tournaments. In addition to our park league, this place is going to be packed most weekends,” said Velek.

Besides the full slate of games, improvements are already underway. From new netting to additional parking, every detail is being fine-tuned.

“We’re going to be adding foul ball netting. We’re actually out here today looking at areas to put in batting cages. We’re also looking at several other small things we have to have done including some extra parking, particularly for tournaments. So those are kind of the two big, big things we’re doing between now and when the first tournament happens in March,” said Cook.

Lowndes County Recreation Director Jennifer Claybrook said Lowndes County has something for all ages and abilities.

“Right now, we have adult soccer signups and we also have basketball, and youth basketball for ages four to 14. We really want to make sure we get the community involved. It’s a great opportunity to come together. We’re going to take registrations for basketball all the way up to Saturday, January 6. We really just wanna make sure we’re serving our community. This sportsplex is a, like what he was saying, a jewel in our cap. But I think it’s just gonna show the love we have for this community and how we come together,” said Claybrook.
