Man crashes car after fleeing from Lowndes County checkpoint

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A man fled from a check-point after deputies suspected he was driving under the influence.

Deputies were conducting a checkpoint on Hwy 50 and Tabernacle Road Saturday when a 39-year-old Columbus man pulled up just before 2 a.m.

When deputies asked the man to pull over to the side of the road, he sped away.

The man lost control of his car on Mill Road, hitting two trees before stopping.

The man was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. A passenger in the car was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.

Their conditions are unknown.

The incident remains under investigation.
