Man sentenced to 40 years in prison for sexual battery

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- A former Palmer Home house parent on trial this week is found guilty Friday of sexually assaulting two girls.

After four long and emotional days, a case involving sexual battery of two girls under the age of 12 has finally come to an end.

Seth Copes has been found guilty for both counts of sexual battery.

The offense happened back in 2006 when Copes and his wife were house parents for Palmer Home here in Columbus.

The trial began Tuesday and wrapped up earlier Friday afternoon.

Prosecuting Attorney Collin Hudson says the whole process has been an emotional one.

“You build a relationship with your victims and especially when you believe your victims and they’re depending on you to try this case and somehow get them justice. You know that can be a lot of weight on your shoulders and you work really hard and your try your best. To see all of that pan out and justice be served– It’s a huge relief,” said Hudson.

Copes was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
