Massive layoffs at Canton Nissan plant

CANTON, Miss. (WCBI)- A huge loss at the Canton Nissan plant.

Up to 700 contract workers are being laid off.

The potential layoffs are due to decreased demand for Titan pickup trucks and NV vans.

6,400 employees and contractors work at the Canton assembly plant.

This move comes after Nissan announced in December it was cutting a thousand jobs at two Mexican factories.

Thursday’s announcement came after the arrest in Japan of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn. He led production expansion in Nissan’s largest market.

A spokeswoman says the cuts are unrelated to his arrest.
