Mathletes Come Out For MSMS Math Tournament

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi School for Math and Science hosted their annual math tournament today, March 1.

It took place in downtown Columbus at the Trotter Convention Center.

Several hundred students from just under 30 high schools across the state came out to compete.

Students have 55 minutes to answer 20 advanced math questions with no calculator.

Each school brought around 20-30 math students to compete.

“They just needed to know that math is so important to everything and make it fun,” says Marcia Stillions of Lee Academy.

Heritage Academy student, Haley Barker added, “You have to do good in your class, like, whatever class you’re in at your school is what your competeing for, so if you have a 97 or something really good, then they would probably choose you.”

Teachers say the tournament had around 14 schools last year and it’s exciting to see the tournament’s growth this year.
