MSU’s McCowan, Howard Selected in 2019 WNBA Draft
STARKVILLE, Miss. (MSU Athletics) – For the first time since 2010, two Mississippi State women’s basketball players have been chosen in the WNBA Draft.
Teaira McCowan was drafted by the Indiana Fever with the third overall pick, becoming the highest Bulldog draft pick since Tan White was taken by the Fever with the second overall pick in 2005.
McCowan will join former State teammate Victoria Vivians (2015-18) in Indiana. Vivians was the eighth overall pick a year ago. For the first time in program history, the Bulldogs have seen a player selected in the first round in consecutive years.
McCowan led Mississippi State in scoring and rebounding, averaging 18.4 points and 13.5 rebounds per game this season while shooting 66.2 percent from the field. Her percentage ranked fourth in the nation this year and is an MSU single-season record.
The Brenham, Texas, native led the SEC in blocks (87) and rebounds (487). She is the NCAA Tournament’s all-time leading rebounder with 240 career boards in the postseason.
Anriel Howard was selected by the Seattle Storm in the second round with the 24th overall pick.
Howard was second on the team in both scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg). She collected a dozen double-doubles this year and scored in double figures 30 times. She closed her career as the No. 6 active rebounder in the nation with 1,303 career boards
