MUW Administrator Named Provost, Vice President Of Academic Affairs
COLUMBUS, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) — A longtime campus administrator is being named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Mississippi University for Women.
Dr. Thomas C. Richardson, who has served in an interim capacity since 2014, was named the sole candidate by a university-wide search committee following a national search.
His appointment was confirmed today (Thursday, March 17) by the Board of Trustees, state Institutions of Higher Learning.
“Dr. Richardson is a widely respected administrator, professor and scholar,” said President Jim Borsig.
“He brings institutional memory, as well as extensive knowledge of our academic programs and operating principles. He will continue to be a vital asset to our senior leadership team.”
A member of the English faculty since 1988, Richardson has served in a variety of roles.
He has twice served in his current role, 1990-95 as vice president for academic affairs and 2006-7 as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.
He continues to hold the title of professor of English and Eudora Welty Chair.
In other roles at The W, Dr. Richardson served as head of the then-Division of Humanities 1988-90 and 1995-98 and as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences 2005-14.
He annually teaches a seminar featuring works of the authors represented at the university’s Eudora Welty Writers’ Symposium.
A widely published scholar, his research focuses on 19th century Scottish literature.
For his work, he has been recognized with the Robert Bruce Award for Outstanding Service to Scottish Studies, a Glasgow Herald Fellowship and a St. Andrews Society of New York Fellowship.
He served as a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Scottish Literature at the University of Glasgow 1984-85.
Richardson holds an undergraduate degree in English from Davidson College and master’s and doctoral degrees from Duke University.
He has pursued additional studies at Trinity College in Dublin and the University of Edinburgh.
