MUW uses ‘Denim Day’ to raise awareness on sexual assault

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi University for Women is raising awareness about sexual assault.

The campus has been asked to donate items for Safe Haven.

A non-profit organization that helps domestic violence and sexual assault victims in the Golden Triangle.

It’s all a part of Denim Day. A campaign started by Peace Over Violence.

Denim Day has taken place over the last 19 years in April to recognize Sexual Violence Awareness Month.

MUW’s Women’s Counseling Center and Office of Dean of Students and a Columbus Air Force Base organization, Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, partnered up to host the event.

Students, faculty and staff were all encouraged to participate in Denim Day and to wear blue jeans.

The U.S. Department of Justice says only 30% of all sexual assault cases are reported.
