New leader elected for Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians

NESHOBA COUNTY, Miss. (WTOK) – The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will look to a new leader for the next four years.

Cyrus Ben defeated current chief Phyliss J. Anderson in a run-off election.

Anderson has led the tribe for the last 8 years.

Ben received over 2,000 votes to Anderson’s 1,100.

The results are not yet official, there are still absentees to be counted.

Ben said he’s thankful for the support.

“It’s been quite a blessing. the support began way before my announcement to be a candidate. throughout the campaign, it grew unto a great group of supporters, and basically it grew into a family.”

Ben will be sworn in, next week at the Choctaw Indian Fair.
