Freshman tailback Corbin White was named MACJC offensive player of the week for his performance in the Tigers’ 30-9 win over Delta last Thursday.

The freshman has been selected as the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC)/JucoWeekly Offensive Player of the Week for games played October 24-26.

“It’s huge for him as well as the team,” Northeast head coach Ricky Smither said. “Corbin’s put in a lot of work. He was here in the spring and worked tremendously hard to get himself back into shape.

“I was just very proud to see him carry on what he did in high school.”

White led the Tigers to a 30-9 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College with his second straight outing as Northeast’s leading rusher.

He compiled 161 yards on the ground on just 13 carries for an average of 12.4 yards per touch. White’s outstanding performance led a Tigers running core that tallied 378 total yards against the Trojans.

The Nettleton native extended an early Tiger lead to 13-2 late in the opening quarter with a 63-yard touchdown run in which he started up the middle, made two defenders miss and cut back down the Mississippi Delta sideline to the end zone.

“It feels good to be honest. I just went out there and tried to play hard and help my team out,” said White. “I couldn’t have done it without coach (Smither) calling my number and without my offensive line and receivers blocking for me.”

After showing his athleticism by toting the ball 17 times during his first collegiate game at Copiah-Lincoln Community College, White was slowed by a lingering injury for the next month.

He was held in check for several games, but fully returned to proper form in Northeast’s rivalry game at Itawamba Community College when he recorded a season-high 27 rushes and 221 yards.

Those stats were the best for any Tiger back since Jaquise Cook racked up 267 in a win at East Mississippi Community College in 2010.

White finished the year with a combined 553 yards, 95 carries and three touchdowns.

“Coming back after my injury it felt good,” said White. “I think I finished my freshman campaign in a great way.”

White will now be considered for honors by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), which announces its countrywide players of the week on Wednesday.
