BREAKING: Official Press Release on Lee CO Plane Crash

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)- Here’s the official Press Release from the Lee County Sheriff’s Department regarding Monday’s plane crash.

Plane Crashes North of Tupelo Regional Airport

At about 8:34 a.m. today, Tupelo emergency responders answered a dispatch to a report of an aircraft crash.

Once on the scene, Tupelo police officers located the aircraft at 8:38 a.m., north of Jackson Street Extended and about 150 yards west of Colonial Estates Road, or about a half-mile from the runway. The aircraft was burning.

Tupelo Fire Department and North Mississippi Medical Center Emergency responders arrived shortly after Tupelo police.

Initial reports are that the plane, a small private aircraft, was carrying three passengers and a pilot. There were no survivors.

“This is a worst-case scenario since no survivors have been found,” said Mayor Jason Shelton. “Tupelo Fire Department, airport emergency responders, and Tupelo police responded immediately and secured the scene and now will be in a secondary role to the FAA as they continue to conduct the investigation.”

The crash site and surrounding area have been secured and will be maintained until investigators from the FAA and NTSB arrive.
