OKOLONA, Miss. (WCBI) —  It’s a new era in Okolona.

The Chieftains drop down to class 1A and there’s a new man leading the football program.

Head coach LaMart Harvey takes over for former coach Jack Clark. Harvey comes over from Thrasher high school after spending 10 years with the Rebels.

“The opportunity to come to Okolona presented itself. I had worked here before in 2006. I really enjoyed the environment. Just the passion for football. When the opportunity arises I was going to take a chance on it,” said head coach LaMart Harvey.

Coach Harvey is also not the only one excited for a new start, but the players say that Harvey pushes them to work harder to become better.

“He’s pushing us in the weight room to make us work hard. He tells us that it’s going to pay off,” said senior Antonio Buchanan.

“He doesn’t play around. He’s very serious about what he does, and tells us money is time, time is money,” said another teammate Dominic Johnson.

The Chieftains haven’t made the playoffs the last four seasons. Now being in a new division, the team wants to improve off a 2-9 season the last two years.

“We are very excited to be moving to 1-a. A lot of great teams. Well coached teams. I’ve coached in 1-a for about ten years. I know the intensity comes. Their are athletes in the league. We are excited to face the challenge,” Harvey said.

“I’m very excited and we have high expectations.
Our goal is to win and hopefully make the playoffs,” Buchanan said.

“I’m very excited. Just got to stay prayed up and come work hard each and every day,” Johnson adds.

Okolona has high goals this season, and coach Harvey feels that his team can be one of the top four in the division to make the playoffs.

“The old cliche’ one game at a time. Starting with our non-three division games, but we have Byers on September 8th to get the division started. Four teams get in and I feel like we can be one of them,” Harvey said.

The Chieftains will open its 2017 season at home against J.Z George on August 18th.
