Oktibbeha Co. Sheriff’s Department works with local banks to help protect residents from scams

OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – It is something you are likely hearing weekly, that scams are everywhere.

Scammers are using different tactics and trying to make victims feel like they are in high-pressure situations in order to get information and money from them.

That’s why the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department is working with local banks to help protect residents who may be victims of scams.

Recently, the department received a report that a victim received a notification claiming her computer system had been hacked. Unable to see the screen, she called the listed number, which claimed to be Microsoft support.

The caller told the victim her computer and bank were compromised.

Eventually, the first scammer transferred the victim to an accomplice who demanded that she make two wire transfers.

The victim was told to lie to bank staff and say the withdrawals were for personal reasons.

The Oktibbeha Sheriff’s department has been visiting local banks and credit union staff to help warn customers about scams – especially if an individual is making a large withdrawal.

While people have the right to take out funds from their accounts, the department reminds the community to never give their personal information over the phone, be hesitant of unknown or unverified callers, and not click on pop-up ads.
