Ole Miss students found dead; one found on campus

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – The University of Mississippi Police and Lafayette County Metro Narcotics are investigating the deaths of two Ole Miss students.

Metro Narcotics Captain Alex Fauver said the students were found Monday, September 21. One was on campus; the other was found at their home in Oxford.

LCMN said they are conducting two separate death investigations and that no evidence confirms they are connected.

The cause of death is still undetermined.

Investigators said packaged Kratom sold from a retail store was found at the scene of both cases.

However, they do not have any information confirming that kratom or any other substance was a contributing factor in either death.

Local, state, and federal partners are working collaboratively to gather the facts and provide answers, according to LCMN.

On Tuesday, September 22, The University of Mississippi released a statement following the confirmed deaths of university students.

Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Dr. Shawnboda Mead said in part:

“The University of Mississippi is heartbroken by the recent loss of two students and extends our condolences to the families, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Mead also shared that University Police are “unaware of any additional student deaths” and that they are remaining in contact with local and state agencies as the investigation continues.

LCMN are asking the public to avoid speculation regarding the causes of the deaths while these investigations remain ongoing.

And as a community resource, deputies said free Narcan is available through vending machines on campus and at the downtown parking garage within the City of Oxford.

Narcan can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and is free is the community at no charge.
