Ole Miss Swept By Georgia to End SEC Season

ATHENS, Ga. (Ole Miss Athletics) – Ole Miss took its first and only SEC series loss of the season on Sunday, falling twice as Georgia swept the series at Jack Turner Stadium.

With the results, Ole Miss (36-16, 13-10 SEC) garners the No. 5 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament in College Station, Texas. The Rebels will play the winner of the new No. 12 vs. No. 13 seed on Wednesday.

Game One | Georgia 6, Ole Miss 5
In a game that began Saturday afternoon, Ole Miss rallied back from a late deficit to take the lead. However, Georgia (39-16, 12-12 SEC) answered with a rally of its own to walk off for the second time in the series, 6-5.

Brittany Finney took the loss in relief, allowing three runs on two hits in a third of an inning. Molly Jacobsenreceived a no-decision, surrendering three runs (two earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Prior to the game being halted on Saturday, Ole Miss took an early 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first on Kaylee Horton’s RBI single down the left field line. The game resumed with a 2-2 count on the board and a runner at first with two outs. Jacobsen needed just one pitch to retire the side, fanning Alysen Febrey.

Georgia, however, would take the lead in the third with three runs. After an RBI single tied the game, Justice Milz sent an RBI single to center to score a run. Kylan Becker’s throw to third was on the money but unluckily hit the runner sliding into the bag, going down as the first error of the senior’s career and allowing a third run to come home.

Ole Miss continued to fight and eventually broke through the regain the lead in the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Bulldog miscues. After two errors extended the game with two outs, Becker singled up the middle to tie the game at three runs apiece. Abbey Latham followed with a double to the left-center, scoring two more runs to push Ole Miss in front.

Unfortunately, the tide turned in the bottom of the seventh. With one out on the board, the Rebels appeared to retire Bulldog slugger Alyssa DiCarlo on two separate occasions. However, both times an illegal pitch was called, ultimately resulting in a walk. A single then put two runners on before a pop up was sent out to shallow right field. With Jessica Puk camped under the ball, the infield fly rule was not administered and Puk lost the ball in the sun, falling in for a single to load the bases.

Georgia followed with a single up the middle to tie the game and walked things off with a single to center field, bringing in Lacey Fincher for the winning run.

Game Two | Georgia 8, Ole Miss 0
In the second game of the day, things got away from Ole Miss in a hurry. The Rebels fell behind early with four runs in each of the first two innings as the Bulldogs completed the sweep, 8-0 in five innings.

Finney received the loss with the start in the circle, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits and a pair of walks. Ava Tillmann came on in relief, surrendering one run on one hit and a walk.

Fincher got scoring started for UGA in the first, sending an RBI single to center. Georgia would go on to add three more runs on an unassisted groundout to first and a two-run double down the right line.

The Bulldogs tacked on four more in the second behind a three-run homer by Febrey and a Milz RBI single down the left line, expanding the lead to 8-0.

The Rebels were able to keep the Bulldogs in check from there but the damage had been done, allowing Georgia to finish off the sweep on their home field.
