PETA claims MSU’s Meat Laboratory went against state’s animal cruelty statute
STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- An animal rights group is claiming that Mississippi State’s Meat Laboratory violated the state’s animal cruelty statute. PETA sent a letter to university police Thursday morning calling for criminal charges against workers for 2 instances that happened in March and August.
In a press release, PETA states that workers there failed to stun the cows and continued the procedure while the cows were conscious.
The university released a statement Thursday regarding these accusations saying quote:
“In evaluating the incidents referenced, the U.S. Department of Agriculture in both cases noted that MSU has “a robust systematic approach to humane handling and slaughter” – which is clear in our policies and practice. It is the intent of MSU to work within existing USDA and university guidelines to correct any deficiencies in our operating policies as it relates to our Meat Science Laboratory.”
