Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department warns of phone scam

PRENTISS COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – The Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department is warning of a scam where someone is pretending to be an investigator with the department.

The scammer will tell residents they have missed jury duty and that there are active warrants for them.

Residents are then instructed to purchase a $900 money card and bring it to the sheriff’s department to resolve the issue.

The sheriff’s department said the caller gave specific information about which judge and other details to convince residents to follow instructions. The Circuit Court Clerk’s Office also received calls from residents who had received similar calls.

Sheriff Randy Tolar said this is a common scam and warned residents to not become a victim.
