Second Mississippi Child Dies From Flu This Season

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – A second child in Mississippi has died from flu-related complications.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported the death today, February 23. The child was was from central Mississippi.

MDHS reported the first pediatric influenza death this flu season in late January. That victim was from South Mississippi.

According to the department of health, there have been a total of 18 pediatric flu deaths reported in the state since they became reportable in the 2008-2009 flu season.

Nationwide, there have been 84 pediatric flu deaths reported this season.

State health officials are still advising you to get the flu shot. They add that while it may not prevent infection, it can reduce the severity and length of illness and could prevent serious complications.
