SNAP Benefits Ending

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Starting in April, up to 51,000 Mississippians will have their SNAP Food Assistance benefits cut.

Mississippi will join twenty one other states that will be cutting SNAP assistance.

A law passed in January requires able bodied adults without dependents ages 18 to 49 must find a job or enroll in a training or educational program in order to be eligible to receive benefits.

Department of Health officials say those that do not meet the requirements will only receive three months of benefits within a 36 month period.

Exemptions to the law include pregnant women, people who work 20 hours or more a week or those who are determined to be mentally or physically unable to work.
