Suspicious Package Causes Scare at GTR Airport

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)- A package left on purpose, by a local professor, causes the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, to temporarily shutdown.

The incident happened at 4:45 Monday morning.

According to GTR Director, Mike Hainsey, an abandoned package was found in the upstairs terminal.

The terminal was evacuated, and Airport Road was blocked off.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Deputies located the box, and determined it was harmless.

After investigating, they learned the package was left inside the terminal, as part of a study by a professor at Mississippi State University.

The item was placed there without permission from GTR officials.

The professor was interviewed by Lowndes County Investigators, and no charges were be filed.

One flight was delayed. Operations returned to normal at 8:15.
