AMORY, Miss. (WCBI)-Well the cold winter is starting to settle in, which is always good news if you’re a taxidermist.

That’s because, the colder the weather gets, the more deer will continue to come out.

Taxidermist say this time of year is typically their busiest.

Ray Smith is a taxidermist in Amory, and he said this year’s deer season didn’t start off the way he hoped due to the warmer weather.

“We had them 3 weeks of you know, warm weather, and it slacked the deer off big time,” Smith said.

But thankfully for Smith, the colder weather is now finally settling in, which means more deer are coming out.

“There starting to show more, our rut is starting to get into full swing now, so our bigger bucks are up and moving, they went from nocturnal to more mid-day patterns,” he said.

Smith has his own shop in Amory, and more deer means more business.

“It goes from one or two deer, to just a massive swarm of deer coming in at one time,” Smith said.

In fact, within the past month alone, Smith has seen more than 30 deer come through his shop.

“On December 31st it picked up that day, and it just went crazy ever since,” he said.

Although this amount of production is beneficial to his business, Smith says at times it can become overwhelming.

“Once a deer is brought in I will inspect the deer to make sure everything is still there, and we’ll sit down to fill out the paper work on the deer, and once the paper work is finished, we’ll puce the position the deer will be mounted in,” Smith said.

From there, Smith puts a small tag on the deer’s antlers.

“Then I’ll get maybe eight or ten deer hides and ship them off to the tannery and it takes about a month and a half to 2 months to come out of the tannery, and once they come back I’ll start throwing deer hides out cause their ready to go and I’ll start mounting my deer,” he said.

And With only weeks left until the end of deer season, Smith said he has already exceeded his goal for production.
