COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)-

The Columbus War Museum is back open- with a new look.

This Veteran’s Day, the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution reopened the Columbus War Museum.

DAR has spent the past four years working to clean up and update the museum with the hope of educating the community and preserving artifacts of local veterans.

DAR Regent Frances Hairston said that is why they put their energy into the museum.

“We hope to preserve this for the future and future generations. That is, preserving the past because it is a hope for the future.”

The museum contains artifacts such as uniforms and photos from every war since World War I.

Former Air Force staff sergeant Charles Box said this museum is important in Columbus.

“We need to remember these men paid a tremendous sacrifice. And there is no other place in Columbus where you can see stuff like this. I encourage everyone to come down and look at it because it is really quite impressive what you’ll see here.”

Hairston said she learned a lot herself during this process and hopes others will do the same.

“I have a greater appreciation of all the men and women who gave their lives and committed themselves to all of this when they joined. That is what I learned.”

The museum is located in the lobby of the Columbus Police Department.
