Tree Giveaway Scheduled For March 11th
TUPELO, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) – The City of Tupelo will distribute about 6,000 seedlings, from 1 until 6 p.m., Friday, March 11 at the pavilion in Veterans Park.
This is the second year the city has partnered with the Mississippi Forestry Commission and the National Arbor Day Foundation for the Mississippi Tree Recovery Campaign to provide a diverse mix of native tree species to homeowners in Tupelo.
The beautiful canopy of trees was destroyed in neighborhoods hit hard by the EF-3 tornado that raked through portions of Tupelo on April 28, 2014.
The shade, the beauty and other benefits of these trees lost in the storm will take years to recover.
“Trees are an integral part to any city, but Tupelo takes particular pride in caring for the city’s trees,” said Mayor Jason Shelton.
“The loss of the mature tree canopy due to the tornado will take years to replace, but the City of Tupelo is taking action now to ensure the future citizens of Tupelo have a healthy, thrive city full of trees.”
