VIDEO: Becoming More Aware With Technology And Social Media

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)-Technology is becoming more and more a part of our lives.

It can make many things easier, but there are also dangers out there.

On Tuesday, a cyber safety seminar was held at Mississippi State University to help raise everyone’s awareness about being more careful and responsible on social media.

Digital expert Richard Guerry was the guest speaker at the seminar, and believes too many people are using technology for the wrong reasons.

He points out that technology should be used as a tool to open and create opportunities and shouldn’t be abused.

Guerry also stressed the importance of developing digital awareness, because once something is posted it’s out there forever and that can bring consequences.

“The next time you see somebody about to take a picture of themselves or you that could get them or you in a lot of trouble, say her, before you take that picture, let me ask you a question,” said Guerry. “Why was the camera invented? What is the fundamental reason that people take pictures, to make what? And what do they usually say, to make memories. So then ask them this question. If the camera was made for making memories, then why are so many people taking pictures of things they don’t want remembered on told that were designed for remembering, and that might get them thinking.”
